Hey everyone! My name is Brian Arets and I am very excited to be the new SBE DEXLab manager. I am born in Sittard and lived in a little remote village called Elsloo, which is only 15 minutes away from Maastricht by car, for my whole life. You can imagine my shock when the first big city I travelled to was Tokyo. I obtained my bachelor degree of applied science at Zuyd Hogeschool (Facility Management), after which I did my Pre-Master at Radboud University (Business Administration). Finally, my journey brought me at the University of Maastricht, completing my Master’s degree (Strategic Marketing). After finishing my studies, I was hired on the short term as a lecturer at UM to see how I would do. Guess they did not trust me yet. Ever since then however, I have been a full-time lecturer, doing so for exactly one-year.

Now that we have the boring stuff out of the way, I can share something just as boring..My personal life! When not at the University I like to spend my time either playing video games, or partake in physical activities. At one point I was even in the top 100 for one video game and I even wrote my thesis about gaming. I honestly also just like spending time looking into the latest trends in technology, especially if they have to do with gaming. Besides this, I also like spending my time trying out new hobbies. I tried playing keyboard, which I honestly should do again, and I also have a telescope which I take out from time to time to watch the starts at night. It should then also come as no surprise that the universe and its constructs interest me a lot! When I have a lot of free time I like to travel to see what the world has to offer! My favourite trips at the moment have been going to Japan and to South-Korea, due to the amazing history and architecture they have!

If I could have one superpower it would have to be either gravity or space control, they are just superior!

I also have three dogs, Nana, Nova, and Winnie, and I like to spend as much time with them as I can. Nana was chaos personified at one point, but has mellowed out a little now that she is 11 (I hope all the destroyed couches and chairs can rest in peace). Nova is a stray from Greece, and even though she needs a little bit of time getting used to someone, when she does she is love herself. Winnie is the youngest at four years old, and definitely the most energetic (I think the pictures are pretty telling as to who is who)

I look forward and am excited to meet and engage with you at the DEXLab, and share our interest about technology there! Enough rambling now, hope to see you in the future!

Kind regards,

Brian
